Cruising with the bottom category – “Category Z”. Is it worth it?

We're planning our first cruise, and frankly don't plan to spend a lot of time in our room (our spendthrift friends are reserving a suite). Royal Caribbean has a Category Z (or Y) that is about $400 cheaper than other rooms because the room assignment isn't guaranteed.
Anyone ever travel this way? What sort of room did you end up with? Do they automatically give you the worst ones or the "best available"? We're cruising in April, so doubt the ship will be full.
